Venessa Lewis – Mom

A few years back, I was talking to a friend and she mentioned having to go home and bake 250-300 cupcakes to feed the homeless. She told me all about the organization and how much she enjoyed being a part of it. I volunteered my girls because I said they love baking and this will give them an opportunity to give back and an opportunity for us to spend time together. The first time we baked the cupcakes, it was an overwhelming adventure. We soon learned that we needed to have a better system so that we were not baking all night long. My daughters started inviting their friends and family members to help with the baking. Now, we have cupcake making gatherings with designated stations, laughter, music and a home that smells like a bakery.  It has become a regular event in our home that we look forward to. Because of our game schedules on Saturdays we were unable to attend the feedings so we would bake the cupcakes on Friday night and my friend would pick them up to deliver on Saturday. A few years back our schedule was clear on a 2nd Saturday and we delivered the cupcakes and volunteered to work. We did not know what to expect but were pleased with the positive vibes, clean environment, loving people and most of all – the good food. We love volunteering with the United Friends to Feed the Homeless. It is an amazing organization that is blessing people in so many ways. Everyone takes pride in their role and enjoys meeting the needs of others. Our role of baking cupcakes is a small one but even helping out with a small task can make a difference in the lives of others. We look forward to helping whenever our schedule allows us. The inner joy received from bringing a smile to someone else is an act of love and kindness. The joy it brings is like no other!
